I am right handed, so using the photo as a guide, I started applying pastel
in the upper left and worked down and to the right. This helps avoid smearing,
though I often use a mahl stick.
It is a good idea to tilt the painting surface slightly
forward from the top to prevent the dust
from contaminating the area just below.
I continue applying pastel down and across. So I don't lose the drawing, I use charcoal to redraw as I go. Also since charcoal is transparent to the colors underneath, I use it to darken shadow areas.
