Working from the upper left to right and down I apply the hardest pastels first. Using hard pastels with a light touch for the first layer, helps to avoid saturating the surface with too much pastel. The softest pastels are added last. If the surface becomes fully loaded with pastel before the painting is finished, any subsequent application will simply fall off. It is easiest to work from dark to light values since dark colors do not lay on well over lighter ones.
