Pastel Demonstration Number II

Underpainting

After completing the drawing and fixing it, the same way that I did with the Balloon Girl demonstration, I did an acrylic underpainting in local colors. After the underpainting was dry, I applied a two coats of an acrylic ground for pastels -- a product made by Golden Acrylics which has silica particles suspensed in an acrylic binder.

When this was dry I finished the painting in pastels. It is the "tooth" on the painting support that holds the pastel. This acryilc ground provides a surface almost likd a fine sandpaper on this 1/8" gessoed Masonite panel. (collection of the artist

NOTE:
You can achieve a more interesting result by using complementary colors or colors of opposite temperature in the acrylic underpainting. The application of pastels in broken color over this underpainting will produce exciting, vibrating interactions of color.
